Nowadays, you hear media reports about autism quite regularly. For instance, about a Dutch celebrity talking about his or her autism diagnosis. Or stories of experience from less well-known Dutch people. When you talk about autism, what exactly are you talking about? What are the pitfalls and qualities of people with autism?
The important thing to start with is that the pitfalls and qualities of people with autism differ as much as those without autism. Everyone is different. You have the term ‘if you know one person with autism, then you know one person with autism’. The essence of this term is that you should look at everyone as an individual. It doesn’t mean that if Peter with autism has a certain trait, that the same applies to Mark with autism.
There are a number of pitfalls that are common among people with autism. I list some of them below:
As I mentioned earlier in this article, not all pitfalls have to occur (equally) in everyone with autism. They are pitfalls that occur in many people with (suspected) autism. Perhaps you recognise some of the pitfalls in yourself. It could also be, for example, that you are very good socially and that you encounter other things that are not listed above.
Of course, people with autism also have several qualities that they can use in their work and life. Some of these qualities may include:
Again, these qualities do not all occur (equally) in every person with autism. Every person is different. Sometimes you can work on a pitfall and use this former pitfall as a quality. And sometimes things remain difficult to do and you need to learn to recognise your pitfall and ask for help in time.
How is that for you? Do you recognise your pitfalls and qualities? And how do you deal with them? Let me know in a comment.

By the way, did you know that employers often have a budget for employees that can be used for personal coaching and programmes such as Rest and Balance at Work?
Are you done with the lack of control and overview when changes occur at work? And that often present fatigue and lack of energy? Could you use some help with this? Or can I help you talk to your manager?
